Two blocks of H Street, between 8th and 10th Streets will be unrecognizable in three years. H Street Connection will span two blocks, the 800 and 900 blocks of H Street NE, and deliver more than 400 new residential units by 2019.

Demolition of the existing shopping center, which until recently included a Rainbow, Game Stop and 7-11, among other retailers, began this week. The development by Rappaport Cos. and WC Smith with designs by Torti Gallas will bring 419 apartments with 435 parking spaces and 44,300 square feet of retail.

Construction of the new, eight-story building should begin this fall after the site is cleared and the project is set to deliver in the fourth quarter of 2019, according to The Washington Business Journal.
